StoryCorpsGSO 2016 Project | “War and Peace Imagined”

Calling all volunteers!

An awesome project and opportunity from the Greensboro Public Library. Volunteers needed to collect veterans’ stories.

StoryCorpsGSO 2016 Project

Every other year, UNCG picks a yearlong theme to bring together diverse talents and expertise from across their entire campus. For their 2016-17 project, the theme is “War and Peace Imagined.”
Due to the success of our 2013 StoryCorps@ Your Library Project, the Greensboro Public Library is collaborating with UNCG to collect stories celebrating the lives of everyday Greensboro citizens affected by war. These Greensboro oral histories will be uploaded to the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

We need volunteers to help collect stories, assist in setting up appointments, and help in planning programs once the stories are collected.

StoryCorps will conduct a two part training on September 9th, 2016 from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and then again on September 10th, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Volunteers must attend both training sessions.

Stories will be collected in September and October. We will collect stories with four target demographic populations:

1) UNCG students who are veterans
2) Older adults in care facilities who have stories about war experiences (either as a soldier or on the home front)
3) Immigrants and refugees affected by war
4) Conscientious objectors

If you would like to sign up for training as a volunteer, email Beth Sheffield at Beth.sheffield@greensboro-nc.gov or call at 336-373-3617.
